fYR* of Macedonia
...where empires have fallen and great wars have started. Centuries of conflicts have left the Balkans in an economic malaise, but the Iron Curtain and lack of development means it's home to Europe's most unspoilt nature. For now.
Prespa and the Balkans
The Prespa lakes sit at the meeting point of three borders:
Albania, Greece and fYR of Macedonia
The nearest airports are found in Ohrid and Greece's second city, Thessaloniki (Salonica)
and next in the capital cities of Skopje and Tirana.
Prespa is a 7 hour drive north from Athens.
More maps can be found here.
And go to 'Getting Here' for directions on how to get to Prespa
by road, train, boat and air
Need better map(s) demonstrating basin, lakes and mountains
Prespa is a true basin.
Two lakes at 850m above sea level, completely surrounded by mountains on all sides, from 1.300m to 2.600m.
Some say that 'Prespa' comes from an old Latin word for craddle.
